Moosehead Area Wilderness Sled Dog Race 2022

Alaska’s Iditarod may be the most famous of America’s annual, long-distance sled dog races – but it’s not the only one. Dozens are held around the country, every year – including right here in Greenville, ME! In fact, our annual Moosehead Area Wilderness Sled Dog Race 2022 is only weeks away, scheduled for February 5th, 2022.

The Lodge at Moosehead Lake is so excited to be here this winter season! Moosehead Lake in winter is a beautiful sight to behold and we are eager to share it with you. The trees sparkling with frost, a thick, white blanket of snow on the ground, the lake icing over, and all the fun, seasonal things to do. Skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, snowmobiling, and Greenville’s annual sled dog race.

The Moosehead Area Wilderness Sled Dog Race

The Moosehead Area Wilderness Sled Dog Race takes place the first weekend of every February, weather and snow conditions dependent. This year’s race, as mentioned above, is scheduled for February 5th, 2022.

The Moosehead Area Wilderness Sled Dog Race race starts off from Greenville, then traverses a loop course through the heart of Maine’s 100-mile wilderness area to return to Greenville. Best of all, the start and finish line are only 4 minutes down the road from our Moosehead Lake bed and breakfast!

Race day sees a variety of challenges for both dogs and mushers, including both a 70-mile and a 35-mile race. The 4 dog team sprint race is new this year, as is the skijoring event.

What on earth is skijoring, you ask? Skijoring is a winter sport in which a person on skis is pulled through the snow by a horse, motor vehicle or, as in this instance, one or two dogs. What fun!

The 70-mile Race starts at 9am, the 35-mile at 10am. Prospective spectators should plan on being at the starting line no later than 8:30am to catch this unique spectacle. Come line the starting chute and take in the intense action as these eager teams tear their way up the trail. Attendees can also view the race teams out on the trail as they head to the northern most checkpoints. So exciting!

Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in all events. Race day also includes a variety of fun activities for spectators. Educational exhibits, a bonfire, and fun activities and demonstrations for everyone.
