Dogsledding
Mush to your own Dogsled when you take a Ride through the scenic North Woods of Maine, you’ll experience the unique sensation of gliding mesmerized by the scenery and snow clicking off the paws of your team.
This is an exceptional and memorable adventure. Your professional guide will teach you how to harness your dogs and steer the sled. Each of the hardworking sled dogs in your team has a special personality you won’t be able to resist. Despite their “wolfish” appearance, they are friendly and love attention. But what they love most is to RUN…and with an energy and enthusiasm that is amazing. The extensive training of both dogs and your Registered Maine Guide will contribute to a safe and comfortable sled dog experience.
The Lodge will send you on your way with a full thermos of gourmet hot chocolate. Consider this adventure easy to moderate in difficulty. Trips are $250.00 per party of 2. Advance reservations required.
NOTE: ½ day, full day and camp-to-camp trips available. Not enough of a challenge? Get the Total North Woods experience with an overnight “cold camping” trip. Call to customize a dogsledding trip just for you.
Ice Fishing
Be adventurous, bundle up, get outside and try fishing in a whole new way--through the ice! Ice fishing action can be fast and furious when winter seals Moosehead Lake under ice. We have a comfortable trip waiting for you with the aid of a Registered Maine Guide and a wood stove heated fish house on Moosehead Lake. There you will place your fishing “tip ups” in drilled holes in the ice. Breakfast is cooked in the hut along with hot coffee and hot chocolate. Fishing gear is provided. Cost $300 up to 4 people. Skiing
Cross country skiers enjoy more than 100 miles of nearby groomed trails including nearby Lily Bay State Park. You’ll glide through spruce and pine forests with incredible views of frozen waterfalls, mountains, ponds and lakes. This sport provides the perfect retreat for nature lovers wanting to catch a glimpse of moose, deer, eagles, rabbits and other native animals, or the fun of identifying all the tracks that intersect your path!
Within thirty minutes of the Lodge is the Birches, located in Rockwood, Maine. This 11,000 acre wilderness resort offers over 20 km of groomed cross country skiing trails.
For other outdoor winter fun, try Big Squaw Mountain Ski Resort. Downhill skiing on one of the most scenic mountains you'll find in Maine includes up to 32 trails. Telephone: 207-695-1000. The Lodge provides a thermos of gourmet hot chocolate or Moose-A-Lix™ just for our lodging guests.
Snowmobiling
A great way to explore the Moosehead Lake region is by snowmobile. Your guided trip leaves from Greenville on our beautifully groomed trail system into breathtaking wilderness that is uniquely Maine. Your journey starts out on ITS (Interstate Trail System) trails, which are easy to navigate and are a great way to practice your snowmobile skills and learn trail etiquette. From the ITS trails your guide will lead you away from the crowds to his favorite and less traveled backcountry trails. Guests can snowmobile directly to the Lodge and park sleds and trailers overnight for added convenience. The Maine Mountains have hundreds of miles of “Backcountry” trails of which many lead to beautiful vistas; others meander through densely wooded trails. Quite often it is on these backcountry trails that a variety of wildlife can be seen such as Moose, coyote, fox, deer and possibly bobcat. Sled Rentals include: 440 - $165/day, 570 - $190/day, 600 Crossfire – $220/day, (2 ups are also available) Guides are available for $160/full day. Clothes can also be rented for $25/day. We use Northwoods Outfitters only 2.6 miles from the Lodge. They pride themselves on safety and a great guest experience.
Snowshoeing
Experience North Woods wildlife while learning to snowshoe. Our Professional Maine Guide will take you on a half day trip through the North Woods. Identify moose, deer, pine martin, fisher, bobcats, beaver, otter, red squirrels, turkey, lynx and more while learning about their environment. Find out where spruce gum comes from and why it is important. You can also try your hand at “Shed Hunting Antlers.” At the Lodge, if you find them you can keep them. Matching sheds can range in value from $200.00 to $1,000.00. Your personal guide also hand makes his snowshoes right here in Maine, either Neoprene or Rawhide. They are used by other guides as well as the foresters in the North Maine Woods. He will show you how they are made and you can even purchase a pair to take home. Morning or afternoon trips available at $275 per party of 2. The Lodge sends you on your way with an Animal Tracks Pocket Guide and Moose-A-Lix™ trail mix.
