Within its first year the Lodge was awarded AAA 4-diamond status and membership in Select Registry, distinguished inns of North America. High status memberships in these organizations requiring stringent surprise inspections, have been maintained each consecutive year since then “When we decided to purchase the Lodge six years ago, we knew we were getting something special,” said Linda Bortis, co-owner of the Lodge.

The Lodge has gone through many rebirths. In 1917 it was constructed as a private summer residence for the Sloper family summer home called “Greenslope”. Later it was converted to a restaurant called Lakeview Manor and is now the Lodge at Moosehead Lake – a Greenville, Maine inn. It has long been known as one of the finest and longest standing luxury properties in in-land Maine. It was Roger and Jennifer Cauchi that first had the vision for the Lodge. They were told they were crazy when developing such a unique lodging experience in the backwoods. It was common to hear – “You’ll never get people to come all the way up here and pay those prices.” The mix of North woods birch tables and décor with the luxury of oriental rugs and wing back chairs, make it a combination not to be found anywhere else.

“There is no doubt that running a lodge, the caliber of this lodge is hard work. In part, it is the attention to detail. We never skimp on a guest request,” added Dennis Bortis. “We have updated every room and the landscaping. It is a constant mission to keep our rooms and the landscape in tune with the times and one guests will enjoy. It is our goal to provide an experience that is imbedded in the history and natural beauty of the Moosehead Lake area while still providing luxury for the discerning traveler.”

The Lodge’s birch twig borders (like ceiling molding) and hand carved beds set the stage in the Lodge and were added by the Cauchi’s. Each room is themed. There is the trout, bear, moose, loon and totem rooms in the main lodge. The Carriage House was first storage and then a retail store, finally converted to luxury retreat suites, making nine total rooms.

When the Lodge was first started, outfitters didn’t exist in the area. In order to create that total North woods experience special activities and trips were designed including the first Moose Safaris by Ed Mathieu, Allagash river trips by Warren Cochran and float plane rides by Max Folsom. Trips now available at the Lodge use guides willing to customize and personalize. “This is an important part of the Lodge offering,” added Linda. “We strive to make our trips the best.”

Dining at the Lodge has also changed over the years. Breakfasts have always been available with every stay but dinners have gone through many evolutions to get to what works today. We wanted to blend what was expected in Maine with warm comfort foods you would look forward to in a Lodge. This has evolved into Up North Cuisine – highlighting things like Lobster Mac & Cheese, Buffalo Meatloaf, and Stuffed Trout and other special dishes, not to mention our Moosopolitan™ Martinis. This summer, the Lodge will also be offering Safari Camp Dinners on Sunday evenings in July and August. A social dining experience in the Lodge fire-pit overlooking the sunset not to be missed.

The Lodge at Moosehead Lake will continue to provide Maine woods adventures by day and relaxing romance by night.

To their delight, they found we use Turkish towels – some of the finest cotton in the world, lots of big white fluffy towels in every room.

Tables are readied for guest breakfast on the deck by Songul. It’s a beautiful summer morning at the Lodge at Moosehead Lake and guests love to eat outside. These young ladies have been able to learn about the Moosehead Lake area. They have taken a white water rafting trip, Moose Safari, Katahdin Cruise, state fair, enjoyed the beach and much more. Both plan to be English teachers in their homeland.

The very best mattresses money can buy – no kidding. Dennis & Chloe try each one out personally.

500 plus thread count sheets, pressed as smooth as silk. Close your eyes and imagine crawling in. Great sensation.

Take a deep breath – that‘s fresh, clean air with a hint of pine. A wonderful smell. No scented soap or fabric softeners at the Lodge.

Open your windows on a summer night and feel the cool lake air on your face. A good night’s sleep should also include a cool room.

And while those windows are open, you will hear almost nothing. Such amazing quiet. Maybe the sound of a loon calling to its mate.

That is all. Then you drift off.

Every room at the Lodge at Moosehead Lake has been uniquely decorated to enable the guest to experience more of what the Maine North woods are all about. . all with love and great detail. The Allagash suite is no exception. This suite was named after the late Herb Cochran, who at the time lived next door and started the Allagash Canoe Trips along with his son Warren. The Christmas before he passed away, he gave the original Lodge owners, his ”POLE” that he used on

these trips. The Allagash suite was named in his honor. On the long inside wall halfway between the living room & bedroom area hangs this pole and suspended from it were several oars that were also given by folks from the Moosehead community.

Additional details includes the boom chains from which the beds are suspended. These came from nearby Rockwood, Maine.

With the addition of the Lodge’s new poling canoe trip – guests can now experience an outdoor skill that has been almost lost. Step back in time and find hidden spots in this remote region only accessible through your canoe and a pole. At the Lodge, it is all about the authentic Maine woods experience – in true luxury.

The loon room on the first floor of the lodge is getting a refresh. Each lodge room is themed to reflect the uniqueness of the north woods of Maine in true luxury. This room centers around the beauty of the loons and others birds you will find here. We have started with the bathroom. A new vanity has been designed with natural black slate counter top and rustic wood, natural birch inlays and unique black baskets filled with soft luxurious towels. We kept the hand carved mirror that matches the popular poster bed. New shower curtains were created to reflect the black and white of the loon and will be carried out in the updating in the bedroom to come. So watch for more changes or just come visit us in Greenville, Maine, the gateway to the North woods.
