Trail Angels stay at the Lodge at Moosehead Lake

Mother, son, daughter, daughter-in-law and grand daughter all stayed at the lodge to celebrate the completion of the Appalachian trail by the grandson. They are all avid hikers and wanted to experience what their grandson was experiencing as he finished this momentous goal at Katahdin. In the process they came across other hikers as well. A couple of young men had very bad equipment including broken hiking sticks. This group, replaced their polls and they were off for more adventure. The next day, they came across a hiker that was very sick. They took him to the local hospital to find out he had pneumonia. They got him antibiotics and a hotel room for the night. This group was truly Trail Angels and I’m sure angels no matter where they go. We welcome them back to Moosehead any time.

It was time to update the website. We wanted something unique, like the property itself, and we think we got it. We were able to combine video and photo sequencing to create a distinctive first impression. From our own research, we knew what was the most important to guests and that’s where our priorities started. Even online reservations changed. It’s now real-time like all the big hotels. Eco Tours and Environment Friendly at the Lodge at Moosehead Lake

We take the environment seriously at the Lodge. When you stay with us, you can be comfortable knowing that the Lodge is heated with an outdoor wood furnace. Wood is an abundant renewable resource in this area. Rebuilding decks includes composite decking material from recycled milk cartons that look great and last a lifetime. Water conservation is also important including new laundry and dishwashers that use only a gallon of water per load, not to mention our weekly recycling program for glass, plastic, cans, etc.

The lodge offers Eco Tours including background on the ecology of the plants, trees, wildlife, Indian facts and legends, the lumber era and the routes the famous naturalist Henry David Thoreau. Enjoy canoeing/kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing – minimal motors on this trip.

Hike to Moxie Falls

Here Dennis and Chloe (the lodge dog) take you on a personal tour of Moxie Falls, an easy and very beautiful hike. Water is currently high and the falls are very full. There are two ways to get to the beginning of this hike – one utilizes Maine highways and the other is a dirt road where a minimum of a SUV is recommended. Moxie Falls is the highest waterfall in New England – over 90 feet and well worth the visit. The Lodge can prepare a picnic lunch with 24 hour notice or provide Moose-A-Lix for an easy snack. Just ask.

Maine trail honors Thoreau, native guides and their treks

Thoreau-Wabanaki Trail: ThoreauWabanakiTrail.org. The Thoreau trail includes portions of the Penobscot River and Moosehead Lake, which Thoreau explored by canoe; along with Mount Katahdin, the state’s highest peak and the terminus of the Appalachian Trail. The first kiosk on the trail and two granite sculptures are in Greenville, where Thoreau began his Moosehead Lake trip.
