Beautifully Remodeled Bear Room :: Luxury Maine B&B

Tuesday, September 15th, 2015

When you own a lodge, a lot goes into a room remodel but most importantly it must appeal to a diverse customer base, particularly guests looking for a luxurious experience.

First, the Bear room had to retain the bear theme.  The beds in the Lodge are all hand carved and are the focal point of each room.  We were able to enlarge the frame from a queen to a king using the same posters.  More and more guests prefer king size beds.

The other major focal point of the Bear Room is the view.  This room had a standard double hung window and a small deck; neither took full advance of this feature, so we enlarged the window.  This wasn’t just a picture window but we sourced windows with a crank out design on the bottom to provide ventilation, wonderful fresh air and cool night breezes.  We then enlarged the deck facing the lake so guests could relax and lounge in privacy.  Privacy walls were also built on the deck.

Next, we considered room arrangement.  When the new window was installed, it was necessary to move the fireplace.  A beautiful floor to ceiling stone fireplace was installed on the opposite corner allowing us to create a cozy seating area and more space for the enlarged bed.  We installed a large reclaimed wood beam over the fireplace giving it a warm, lodge patina. A south window was removed for more wall space; a large HD TV was hung on the wall and an area rug brought the seating area together.

We had a hand-carved mirror to match the beds that was placed in the bathroom. Keeping the bear theme, we found a beautiful piece of granite that was perfect for the large vanity top, beverage center and footrest in the shower. The granite has lots of black and earth tones – you might think it resembles the walls of a bear cave – a fancy bear cave anyway.  The bath had a Jacuzzi-style tub/shower.  This was removed to make way for a new modern large tile shower and enlarged vanity.  We learned guests like more space for their things so larger vanities are a plus.  The large shower has both a rain showerhead and handheld shower hose.  If that wasn’t enough luxury we added a towel warmer.

In the corner of the room we installed the beverage center. Guests can brew their own coffee and access water and ice.  The beverage center also includes a small refrigerator, coffee mugs, wine and water glasses; creamers, sugar, wine opener – all you need.

Temperature control was another upgrade; the new fireplace includes a remote, as does the new personal air conditioning unit. No need to move from your chair or bed to   control your environment.

The finished room offers luxury, comfort and relaxation – all you could ever want for a luxury vacation in the North woods of Maine. Book early to be sure you get the Bear Room.

Student Exchange Program at the Lodge Provides Great Service

Monday, July 30th, 2012

Duygu is one of the Lodge’s Room Attendants. She and Songul (left) are here for the summer from Turkey practicing their English and enjoying the guests from all over the world. To their delight, they found we use Turkish towels – some of the finest cotton in the world, lots of big white fluffy towels in every room.

Tables are readied for guest breakfast on the deck by Songul. It’s a beautiful summer morning at the Lodge at Moosehead Lake and guests love to eat outside.  These young ladies have been able to learn about the Moosehead Lake area.  They have taken a white water rafting trip, Moose Safari, Katahdin Cruise, state fair, enjoyed the beach and much more.  Both plan to be English teachers in their homeland.

Refurbished Guest Pantry at the Lodge at Moosehead Lake

Saturday, January 1st, 2011

We tackled refurbishing the Guest Pantry to improve the look and functionality for our guests just in time for the New Year’s Eve weekend.  We found 3 layers of flooring that was removed and replaced with ceramic tile, added a smaller refrigerator, small sink with instant hot water for teas and hot chocolate and built in trash receptacle below the sink. The counter top was also replaced with New England Red slate.  With all our remodeling projects, we aim to maintain the original feel of the lodge and we think we have. Now we have much more usable space for snacks and beverages available anytime.

What changes have you made to the Lodge since you’ve been here?

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

This is a common question by many guests so we are going to take this blog post to answer it. The lodge became a country inn in 1995. Our goal is to offer discerning travelers the opportunity to surround themselves with authentic North woods décor, cuisine, and a full slate of comforts and amenities. The original owners started down this path and we wanted to bring this back adding some of our own touches as well. We stay in every room throughout the year just to be sure it is comfortable and not missing something. Some of our changes are here:

  • New 2-bedroom suite “Mt. Kineo” that can accommodate 2 couples or teenage children, etc.
  • New Katahdin bathroom with enlarged tile shower, floor, double Jacuzzi-style tub and new vanity
  • New parking lot within easy access of the suites
  • New septic system
  • Drainage system around the lodge
  • Remodeled dining room with bench seating
  • New white cedar fencing around the parking areas
  • New website with real time availability and booking engine.
  • New HD TVs in the Bear, Moose, and Allagash Suite
  • Compact refrigerators added to the Loon and Totem rooms
  • New Keurig single serve coffee makers in the suites
  • New CD clock radios in the suites with MP3 player plug-ins
  • New white towels that are Egyptian cotton in the suites and Turkish cotton in the lodge rooms.
  • New luxury chocolate brown bathrobes
  • New patio umbrellas
  • Front porch rebuilt
  • New covered dining entrance
  • New roof on the lodge
  • Newly designed amenities for all the rooms
  • New glassware for bar and dining
  • Redesigned and landscaped gardens throughout the lodge property
  • New window treatments, custom shower curtains, duvets and some reupholstered chairs in the Moose, Baxter Suite, Totem, Trout, and Mt. Kineo suite.  This winter will be doing the Loon and Bear rooms.
  • New “Up North Cuisine” dinner menu based on guest input – more casual, flexible and continues the warm comfortable feeling of the lodge.
  • Martini Menu including the Mooseopolitan™ Martini.
  • Wood burning furnace that heats the lodge and water to save on oil use.
  • Resource of hiking trails in each room
  • Annual guest surveys to see how we are doing and identify opportunities.
  • Full concierges’ services for reserving dinner and activities.

Family and friends have told us for years that our home was warm and inviting.  This is what drew us to the Lodge.  It is great to share with so many!
