Right out of the oven, fresh made blueberry Kolaches and Twisty Tails. This is a special breakfast treat for guests breakfast this weekend and a recipe from my mother. She would be proud. The only difference is she used cherries, prunes or apricots in the center; I used blueberries - we are in Maine of course.

Eco Tours and Environment Friendly at the Lodge at Moosehead Lake

We take the environment seriously at the Lodge. When you stay with us, you can be comfortable knowing that the Lodge is heated with an outdoor wood furnace. Wood is an abundant renewable resource in this area. Rebuilding decks includes composite decking material from recycled milk cartons that look great and last a lifetime. Water conservation is also important including new laundry and dishwashers that use only a gallon of water per load, not to mention our weekly recycling program for glass, plastic, cans, etc.

The lodge offers Eco Tours including background on the ecology of the plants, trees, wildlife, Indian facts and legends, the lumber era and the routes the famous naturalist Henry David Thoreau. Enjoy canoeing/kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing - minimal motors on this trip.

30 Mile Wilderness Dog Sled Race - Greenville, Maine

The 30 Mile Wilderness Dogsled race is scheduled for February 6th starting at 11:30 AM. It begins and ends in Greenville Maine at the Maine Warden Service. Sled dog teams race up the lake, crossing Lily Bay Road and jumping on the trail that connects to the 100 Mile Wilderness area over Appalachian Mountain Club Camp to Camp Ski Trails and Plum Creek Timberland Property.

Many Viewing points, one of the best being at West Branch Pond Camps in Frenchtown Township. Easy access downtown at Warden Service in Greenville at race start. Viewing Moose is the primary reason tourists come to the Moosehead area. We often think that Moose viewing is good in the spring through fall, but look moose in winter, too. Whether you are snowmobiling, snowshoeing or skiing across the beautiful North woods - look out for moose. You may just have a pleasant surprise. The lodge has an over 500 VHS and DVD movie library. Recently added was the award winning Julie and Julia with Meryl Streep. This is a fun movie to watch in the comfort of your room. Every room at the lodge has their own VHS/DVD players.

We returned from Thanksgiving holiday to be greeted by over 5" of snow at Moosehead Lake. It was a torturous last five miles fish tailing up Lily Bay Road - we hadn't put the snow tires on yet! The next few weeks will be filled with decorating projects to prepare for our holiday guests. Be sure to make your reservations now. We are planning a great NYE dinner and with the snow, all kinds of activities will be available.

We woke to the first snow fall of the year. It would appear to be about 5". They are forecasting a little more today and then sunny for next couple days. This is all you need to go snowshoeing. It is always special to walk on new fallen snow. Make your winter plans soon!

The garden patios from the Carriage House suites have been updated and remodeled with slate embedded in small stones. The picture is the Katahdin Suite garden. Each garden has areas to add annual flowers in the spring for color and easy access to a pathway leading to the yard overlooking Moosehead Lake and surrounding mountains.

The Lodge hosted a Labor Day picnic for guests . According to Ron & Shirley, from Newfield, ME "As for the picnic, games were a good touch and much appreciated; food was excellent; and the setting was superb.Thanks for a memorable experience." The menu included all you can eat buffalo burgers, bbq baby back ribs, salads and the Ultimate Brownie - not to mention our home-brewed Pineapple Margaritas.

Moose Weathervane on Carriage House at Lodge at Moosehead Lake

Found in the basement of the carriage house was the copper moose without his antlers. Dennis welded the antlers, polished him up and fixed the base. Now it is back where it belongs, looking out over Moosehead Lake and directing you to the sunset and wonders of the north woods.

Moosehead Lake from a visitors seaplane ride looks like the head of a Moose. Can you see it? This picture was taken last week as a guest took a ride with Jack's Air Service, right here in Greenville, Maine. The lake is 20 miles by 40 miles and is the largest instate lake east of the Mississippi River. Taking a seaplane ride is one of two very popular activities for vacationers. The other activity is of course a Moose Safari. Moose can also be spotted from the air, with a keen eye.

The Lodge opened for dinner service last night and is now open Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Columbus Day weekend in mid-October. Chef Abby Freethy kicks off the season with her Maine Lobster, Parsnip and Asparagus Dumplings, Grilled Filet of Beef, Crayfish & Spinach Stuffed Native Trout and many other Up North specialties. Dennis and Chloe enjoy the Moosterpiece Craft Fair in Greenville Maine on Saturday morning. It was a great day to view local art and crafts only a couple miles from the Lodge at Moosehead Lake. This was one of many events in the Moosehead area to honor the Moose. Other events included the 15th Annual Moose River Canoe & Kayak Race in Rockwood.
