Maine trail honors Thoreau, native guides and their treks

Thoreau-Wabanaki Trail

Thoreau-Wabanaki Trail: ThoreauWabanakiTrail.org. The Thoreau trail includes portions of the Penobscot River and Moosehead Lake, which Thoreau explored by canoe; along with Mount Katahdin, the state's highest peak and the terminus of the Appalachian Trail. The first kiosk on the trail and two granite sculptures are in Greenville, where Thoreau began his Moosehead Lake trip.

Go on a Moose Safari when you stay at the Lodge at Moosehead Lake?

Exclusively for our Lodging Guests!
Unquestionably, the most often asked question…will we see moose during our stay with you? Providing our guests with a Moose viewing experience is what we specialize in and we also do better than anyone else! It is in the inland lakes and mountain region of the Moosehead Lake area where Moose outnumber people 3 to 1.

During your visit we can arrange for a guided tour known as a “Moose Safari” to see these majestic animals. For the adventurous ones our staff of Registered Maine Guides will take you on a private canoe journey to a pristine remote mountain pond to view Moose. What attracts moose to bodies of water is the aquatic vegetation that they feed on during the summer months. Most of our sightings are often within 50 feet.

If a canoe journey is not for you…then sit back and relax and take a tour on the cruise boat “The Discovery”. Here, your part of a intimate group (23 people max.) who voyage out on Moosehead Lake to see a variety of wildlife such as beaver, osprey, mink, river otter, nesting bald eagles and not to mention the guest of honor - The Majestic Maine Moose! As you enter into a river that flows into Moosehead Lake it is in this area that the habitat is ideal. As you proceed into this river one feels as if they are “floating down the Amazon on the African Queen”. For guests who are with us several nights, we highly recommend both tours for each one provides a unique experience.

June & July are the prime months in which moose are seen practically every trip. The remainder of the summer also offers excellent viewing opportunities.

Tours are approximately 3 hours in duration. For departure times and rates, inquire when you secure your lodging reservation. Advance reservations are highly recommended!

Shopping around Moosehead Lake

As you enter Maine from the South, your first shopping stop would be the Kittery Outlets (which we personally prefer). An hour up I-95 is Freeport . . . you guessed it L.L. BEAN. While in Freeport if hunger strikes . . . start your North Woods experience by snacking at the Broad Arrow Tavern (another personal favorite!!) at the Harraseeket Inn. Once in Greenville you'll find a variety of shops...rustic antiques to casual clothing. And, here at the Lodge you'll find Miss Elaine E. Moose's Moo-see-um, a moosterly arranged miscellaneum of take home gifts! If you are traveling to or from the White Mountains, you'll find great Outlet Shopping in North Conway which is tax free. Keep in mind that the majority of merchants will ship for you . . . be sure to ask! We do & they should.

If we aren't athletic should we really come to Moosehead?

By all means YES!!!!! You can spend the days lounging on our decks or patios and being waited on hand & foot! Lily Bay State Park offers a pebble beach, b-b-q grills, and easy walking trails. The Katahdin an old boom steamer offers 3 hour lake excursions. You may even want to take an aerial tour of the lake via a "float plane". In the village, you'll find 7-8 interesting shops to browse through. Then there is nothing more enjoyable than our evening sound & light show......magnificent sunsets fade into clear skies filled with millions of stars, the fireflies light up our field, and in the background you'll hear the Loons calling out to you.....The simple pleasures of life at The Lodge at Moosehead Lake.

How big is Moosehead Lake?

Moosehead Lake is the largest body of water east of the Mississippi within the confines of one state, measuring approximately 40 miles long and 22 miles wide. This can, of course, vary depending on who you talk to!! The lake actually freezes 3-4' thick during the winter!
